Mandarin

Try and find a more colorful fish, I dare you. We've been to several continents and most oceans looking, but this guy takes the cake. He's called a Mandarin Gobi and we found him under a town pier in South Sulawesi Indonesia. It was on a muck dive, which basically code for horrible "normal" diving conditions; there is no pretty coral, no reef fish, loads of trash, and terrible visibility. However, amidst all of those poor conditions you can find some of the coolest and most unusual creatures in the sea. Mandarinfish hide inside the reef all day long waiting for the twilight hour around sunset to emerge in the open where they perform a beautiful mating swim. We captured a cool photo of this very happy male on his way back to his hiding place to rest.
