The Whole Clan
It is pretty amazing to be around these magnificent creatures. The more we swim and interact with these giant Humpbacks, the more we start to realize how intelligent they really are. Over the years we have noticed that they don't like us to approach with the sun behind us. While it would enable us to get a better picture, it would make it hard for the Humpbacks to see us. They actually position themselves effortlessly beneath us in order that the sun is lighting us up so they can watch what we're doing. After spending some time with this group we must have gained their trust because they let us move around to the sunny side so that we could capture an image that would reveal more detail in this group of whales. This photo was taken under NMFS Permit #10018 & 895-1450 during research activities pursuant to this permit.
